Lincoln Assailed Again

Lincoln selfie

A commendable bust of
old Honest Abe,
Installed  on a walkway
across from the courthouse
on the shore of Lake Merritt,
Yet sadly they put it
at eye-level and arm's reach
by a wild sidewalk
near the wild end of the Lake,
Mentally-ill street people
mainly African Americans
abide here and are often angry,
sometimes spiteful and malicious,
On the pedestal lay a chiseled rock
more like a stone-age axe
which someone had used to strike
the freshly caste metal
leaving scratches and gouges
Striking such a metal statue
with a rock would be quite painful
so the miscreant must have stopped
but he left the stone he'd used
for others to follow suit

One needed overstate
the tragic irony
to the memory of one
who took a bullet in the head
to free the slaves

Mosque or church
A prayer said
is a benefit to the world

The public library
open to all
a boon to all

Here you can discern scars
from the senseless attack
on his cheek
and on his forehead,

A martyr never stops
being martyred
it's his role

Back the way we came
the pendulum's
return trip

Flag of the City of Oakland
flying upside-down yesterday,
The Town
careless and clueless

Shorebirds and Driftwood (MLK Day)

Just what it says in the heading
Lots of pictures of the same ideas
in a motion study click-through
not for everyone's cup of tea perhaps
but dig the Flaneur must

California size
driftwood

Winter sunlight
dim yet sustaining

Flocks of shorebirds
fly in formation
just above the water

A strange figure jogs past
along the edge

The sea returns
what falls into it
mammoth trees

Winter driftwood
piles of it

Enthusiasts compile it
in homage
to the San Francisco skyline
vaguely in view

But I'm here for the birds

Their thrilling
volatility

We are quite sympatico
they sense I'm a gentleman

A fantastic burled tree

Wait
what is that?

A new life-form
for the experienced nature boy
Curious
must be a fungus

One that apparently
fell from space

After the pandemonium
the birds calm down again

Then group mind asserts itself

And they are up in the air

 Frankly

it's incredible
a wonder to behold

The miraculous
way of the world

The dream of shelter

The abundant sea

A peaceful kingdom
under the existential
threat of plastic,
Short-sighted heedless
mankind

 The primordial
for the moment
still here

Under the influence
of cannabis chocolate
it's almost too much
joy

Mild day despite
the overcast
Moms stroll
the submarine walkway
emerged at medium tide

from
Crab Cove

The promise of a bough
with pinecones attached

A one point a guy
approached the shorebirds
led by two snappy little dogs
on a leash
NO DOGS
I said with patriarchal
almost God-like
police voice
He turned the yappers
 right around

Wasn't home long
before the MLK march
passed by my vantage point

I danced along
to riddem of the saints

 A band on the back
of a yellow truck
led the parade

Among the placards
red flags and
the flag of Puerto Rico

They are not happy today
about a certain shithole rat

Word to the plutocrats
take heed of a red flag
Warning

Alone again

But abidingly
for me
it is a day of peace

Long Walk on Russell Street

Moroccan Berkeley
a fine constitutional
through earliest Spring

Flashy jackets may come and go,
denim you always have with you

Realm of  the delicate
iris

Cruising for hip grannies

Vital colors
even in natural light
I don't have to
 psychedelicize

Buy hey,
that's what I do

Contemporary Gothicism

After all, Berkeley's
Halloween central
takes place on upper Russell
the other side of College Ave

Harmless occultism
white magic
of the new age variety

Demons of the nature
of the affluent class

A little January sunshine
after some rain and...

It's like Spring

The New Year's sunlight
gets stronger every day

The old Berkeley
lifestyle

A succession of mild
visual pleasures

Some folks feel
quiteat home
amid spikes and quills

Xmas bulbs still bobbing
in the garden of succulents

A woke house
we are all colors
 in the spectrum

This Grammar school
has a butterfly garden

Spooning trees

Oversize Xmas bulb
on a traffic island

Time has come today
Sun-dial
a fond anachronism

I hopped a 12
on MLK

But it malfunctioned
a few miles later
and I got out
to await the next one

Bumping as a result into
a lovely flowering tree

Swinging like a bell
in the breeze
Until the next bus showed

Meanwhile the first bus
eventually pulled away
without me

At Grand Lake
we bumped into
the first bus again
stalled and stranded
Tired Friday passengers
loaded into our bus
